The Plastic Garden aims to revitalize the moat adjacent to Toronto's regional transit hub, Union Station, a space that, despite its neglect, is traversed by thousands of commuters every day. The intention is to diffuse this traffic and introduce a condition conducive to longer stays in the space. The insertion of bright, playful plastic trees is a stark contrast to the dreary surroundings and compensates for the lack of light, as the moat is permanently shadowed by Union Station to the south. The introduction of seating and soft, undulating flooring in key areas ‘furnish’ the space and creates an inviting quality, turning the moat into an outdoor extension of the waiting areas indoors.
